It has been a crazy year. Full of emotion, growth

It has been a crazy year. Full of emotion, growth and realization. Today should have been Molly + Jason's wedding in New Jersey. The weather today is nothing less than perfect. They would have had 125 of their family and friends saying I do on a mountain top overlooking a breathtaking landscape.

That didn't happen. You know what did happen? A magical elopement with six people underneath the most majestic tree in South Carolina this past July.

It's almost been 2 months since these two said "I Do," and it was better than perfect. Yes, the dream of the big wedding didn't happen, but the union of your love did. I am honored to have been a part of your amazing journey through this all. A year of planning and we changed everything within 2 weeks!

If this year has taught us anything, it's to realize what really matters. 💕

#blackouttuesday It hasn't felt right to post about celebrations and weddings and important life events for quite sometime when our lives are changing as we speak. The world is hurting right now, but there is a great awakening. I can feel it in my bones. I am joining the #amplifymelanatedvoices movement, tomorrow, for my BIPOC friends that need to be heard now. I am here, ready to listen and learn. I will be amplifying black voices by continuing to post resources in my stories, but you may not see me post for a bit longer. #muted

I originally posted this on my personal Facebook page, but I am compelled to express these thoughts here, as a business owner, with a platform.

If you are not a woman, you'll never know the underlying fear of walking home alone at night and carrying your keys between one finger "just in case." If you are not gay, you'll never know the fear of showing affection in public or holding someone's hand simply because you love someone.

If you are not an immigrant, you'll never know the fear of speaking with an accent and told to go back to where you came from.

If you are not a person of color, you'll never know the fear of being arrested (and, killed) simply by your skin color.
I am not sure how much more simply to describe privilege. Privilege does not mean anyone is taking away your personal struggles in life. It's acknowledging that you can walk down the street and not have all this underlying fear all the time. It's acknowledging that you were lucky enough to be born with skin color that makes you take simple things in life for granted.

If someone asked you to switch your life with a person of color, would you? If your answer is no, than deep down, you already know how to be an ally. If your answer is still no, than you know your privilege and you may not want to admit it.

If you're lucky enough to not have to experience racism, dig deep and be an ally. Be a friend. Be able to SEE color. Acknowledge the inequality of freedoms that should be everyone's God given rights. Black lives matter because we're all fucking human. If you're annoyed at the statement that #BlackLivesMatter you've missed the point and your privilege shows.

Again, I am not saying your struggle doesn't matter. No one is saying only people of color matter. Financial and socialeconomic prejudice exist as well. My family has experienced these judgments plenty of times. Especially, being immigrants. Although my parents escaped communism and struggled here in the U.S., it doesn't erase the fact that our skin tone gives us privilege. [...Continued in comments...]
